【USA】JKA Report of Takashina Camp 2023

The Shotokan Karate Center – Coral Springs JKA (“SKC”) dojo in Coral Springs, Florida, was pleased to host JKA HQ instructor, Keisuke Nemoto, 6th Dan, JKA, six-time winner of the JKA All Japan Karate Championship, to serve as Guest Instructor for the annual Sensei Shigeru Takashina Memorial Training Camp, held this September 28 – October 1, 2023, in Delray Beach, Florida.  This training camp brought together over 75 JKA karateka from across the United States, the Caribbean, and South America, who all share in the lineage of the late Sensei Shigeru Takashina, 9th Dan, JKA, (September 28, 1943 – September 3, 2013) to participate in 4 days of “seeking perfection” of Kihon, Kata, and Kumite.

Sensei Takashina graduated from JKA Instructor School in 1968 and then moved to Florida in the United States in 1972 at the suggestion of Master Nakayama, becoming the youngest JKA instructor in the US. He quickly developed a large following in Florida and throughout the Caribbean and South America.

“Sensei Takashina was the embodiment of modern Bushido throughout his entire life, both on the dojo floor, in the competition ring, and even towards the end of his life”, said Sensei Carol See Tai, 6th Dan, JKA, his top student and chosen successor as Chief Instructor of Coral Springs JKA. “We honor him by continuing our focus on JKA Shotokan and passing this along to our own students, his next generation.”

Now entering its 10th year, SKC was reorganized after Sensei Takashina’s passing to be a non-profit educational foundation whose mission is to share and promote the virtues of JKA karate to the public. SKC is a proud member of the Japan Karate Association – American Federation (JKAAF), under the leadership and guidance of Sensei Takayuki Mikami, 9th Dan, JKA. The Takashina Memorial Training Camp is an annual event.
