【INDIA】JKAWF INDIA Jharkhand Monsoon Karate Camp & Dan Test
The JKAWF INDIA Jharkhand Monsoon Karate Camp was successfully organized by JKA Bokaro on August 30-31, 2025, at Amrut Park Indoor Hall, Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand. The event was sponsored by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd.
Day 1: August 30, 2025
The training sessions were led by Somnath Palchowdhury Sensei, 6th Dan, Chairman of JKAWF INDIA, and Arindam Sikdar Sensei, 5th Dan, Technical Committee Member of JKAWF INDIA. The day’s training commenced with Sonaba Kihon, focusing on fine points of JKA standardised Kihon techniques, including: Choku Zuki, Age Uke, Soto Uke, Uchi Uke, Gedan Barai, and Mae Geri.
The second session covered the basics of Zenkustu Datchi, followed by drills to improve speed while moving forward and executing Oi Zuki with a thrust. Students also practiced shifting body weight to the back leg while moving backward and turning while retreating.
After a 25-minute recess, the third session was dedicated to students of 4th Kyu and above grades, who practiced: Taikyoku Shodan Kata (earlier in the day, as part of the first two sessions, all students had practiced this kata), Bassai Dai Kata, and correct way of Jiyu Ippon Kumite.
JKA Shodan Examination: Following the final session, a JKA Shodan examination was conducted by Somnath Palchowdhury Sensei and Arindam Sikdar Sensei, with prior approval from the JKA HQ, Tokyo for the first time in JKAWF INDIA. Eight students appeared for the examination, and all successfully passed.
The first day of the camp concluded on a successful note, with participants demonstrating significant improvement in their techniques.
Day 2: August 31, 2025
The second day commenced at 9 am, focusing on advanced techniques for students of 4th Kyu and above grades. The training session began with an in-depth exploration of Gyaku Zuki for Jiyu Kumite, including: Sliding forward and backward using Yori Ashi, Renzoku Waza of Gyaku Zuki, practicing Gyaku Zuki while moving forward with a partner, defending Gyaku Zuki while moving back, practiced with partners.
Following a short break, students of all grades participated in a session on Gohon Kumite, covering: basics of attacking and counter-attacking, covering long distances in a straight line, compressing the back leg and using Yori Ashi for blocking long attacks of Jodan and Chudan Oi Zuki.
The final session was divided into two groups:
Group 1 (Below 4th Kyu Grades)
Led by Arindam Sensei, students diligently practiced: Kata Heian Shodan to Heian Sandan.
Group 2 (4th Kyu and Above Grades)
Led by Somnath Sensei, students received in-depth training on: Kata Tekki Shodan, correct waist movement, correct head movement in Kata, and Namigaeshi.
After the training sessions, a meeting was held with parents and instructors led by Somnath Sensei to discuss the principles and goals of the Japan Karate Association. Three students were identified by Somnath Sensei with exceptional potentiality to improve and bring laurels for the state.
Closing Ceremony: To express gratitude, mementos were presented to Somnath Palchowdhury Sensei and Arindam Sikdar Sensei for their guidance and efforts and to the representatives of ONGC Ltd. for their sponsorship and support.
The camp concluded with a formal group photograph, marking the successful completion of the JKAWF INDIA Jharkhand Monsoon Karate Camp.
